Free benefits review

A free review of your federal benefits, with someone trained on them

The free benefits review is a one-on-one conversation with a Federal Retirement Consultant (FRC®) about your pension, TSP, health and life insurance, and retirement timing. It costs nothing, you are never obligated to buy anything, and you decide what happens next.

What is the free benefits review?

It is a working conversation about your actual numbers. Your FRC walks through how your FERS or CSRS annuity is figured, what your TSP can and cannot do, how FEHB and FEGLI carry into retirement, and which dates and elections matter for you. You leave knowing where your real decisions are.

  • Your pension. How your high-3, years of service and retirement age combine, and what the survivor election would cost.
  • Your TSP. Contributions, the agency match, fund choices and the withdrawal options at separation.
  • Your insurance. Keeping FEHB, the Medicare question at 65, and FEGLI costs after you retire.
  • Your timing. Your minimum retirement age, your best dates, and what a RIF, VERA or VSIP offer would change.

What the review is not

It is not advice from the government, and it is not a commitment. FRC holders are independent professionals, not OPM, not your HR office and not part of any agency. FFEBA is an education organization that makes the introduction; FFEBA is not an advisor, broker-dealer, registered investment adviser or insurance agency. A review does not guarantee any outcome.

Who is the FRC?

An FRC is a financial professional who has earned the Federal Retirement Consultant designation, which is issued by FFEBA and listed in FINRA's professional designations database. FINRA lists designations; it does not approve or endorse them.

  1. 01

    Prerequisites

Candidates meet two of three: a bachelor's degree or higher in business, finance or economics, or two years of industry experience, a state insurance license or a qualifying FINRA registration, or a listed credential such as CFP, ChFC, CLU, JD or CPA.

  2. 02

    Coursework

Study across FERS and CSRS, Social Security, the TSP, FEHB and FEGLI.

  3. 03

    Exam

An online, closed-book, proctored final certification exam.

  4. 04

    Upkeep

Six continuing-education credits every year (FINRA, retrieved 2026-10-11) and a background check (federalretirementconsultant.com, retrieved 2026-10-12).

You can verify any FRC by name before you meet.

What should I bring?

Bring what you have; nothing is required. These make the hour go further.

  • Your latest SF-50. It shows your retirement plan, service computation date and pay.
  • A recent Leave and Earnings Statement. For sick leave hours, pay and FEGLI deductions.
  • Your TSP statement. Balance, contribution rate and fund mix.
  • Your Social Security statement. From ssa.gov, for the supplement and the age-62 picture.
  • Military service records, if you served, and any deposit paperwork.
  • Your questions. Write them down. They set the agenda.

Before you book

Fair questions, straight answers.

Is the federal benefits review really free?

Yes. The review costs you nothing, and there is no fee afterward for the review itself. It is free because the FRC professionals in our network sponsor FFEBA's education and matching. You are never required to buy anything or to keep working with the FRC you meet.

Will the FRC try to sell me something?

The review is a conversation about your benefits. Some FRC holders are licensed to offer financial or insurance products, so you may hear what they offer if you ask. Whether you hear more after the review, and from whom, is your choice.

Is the FRC from OPM or my agency HR office?

No. FRC holders are independent professionals. They are not OPM, not your agency's HR office and not part of any U.S. government agency. Your HR office and OPM remain the official sources for your records and your retirement application.

How long does a review take?

Plan on about an hour. Reviews happen by phone or by video, whichever you prefer.

What if I am not close to retirement?

That is fine. Many people book a review 5 or more years out, when there is still time to adjust TSP contributions, buy back military service or plan a retirement date. Pick your career stage in the match questions and your FRC will shape the review around it.

How do I know the FRC is real?

Look them up by name. The FRC Lookup confirms whether a person currently holds the designation, and FINRA's professional designations database describes the designation itself. Our verify page links to both.
