FRTIB data as of October 1, 2026, covering 7,344,219 civilian and uniformed services accounts. Beneficiary accounts are excluded.

The July 1 record was 224,420. The small dip came in a quarter when the S Fund and bond prices fell, but year-to-date returns through September 30 were still strong: 16.45% for the I Fund, 12.73% for the C Fund, and 11.62% for the S Fund.

The count does move with markets. Tracking shows it fell about 42% at its low point in 2022 before recovering to new highs.

The average account is about $157,000, with FERS participants averaging $234,000 and CSRS participants $258,000. The overall figure is lower because it includes military and beneficiary accounts. A majority 56% of TSP accounts hold less than $50,000.

Reports list total TSP assets of $1.158 trillion through September, while withdrawals and new loans outpaced new investments and loan repayments by more than $17 billion. To see where your own balance could be headed, try FFEBA's TSP calculator.
